Legend has it that the father of South African surfing, John Whitmore, discovered the waves at Jeffrey's Bay in the late 1950s as he drove up the famous N2 "Garden Route" between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. Although Jefferys Bay got its name from a Captain Jefferys in the 1840's, it is more famous today for its surfing spots and the yearly event of The Billabong Pro, Surfing Contest. This brings the world's best professional surfers to town during the month of July, when it is said that the best waves are running along the Point known as "SUPERTUBES". Jefferys bay has also become a popular holiday destination due to the great swimming beaches and various leisure experiences in the area.
